Program Description:
Sharif Rahman Summer Scholarship
Open to: FIE Summer Students (not including Conflict and Struggle for Peace)
Location: London, Dublin, Barcelona and Madrid
Award: $1000

Sharif Rahman Summer Scholarship recipients are chosen not for academic aptitude, but for a wholehearted commitment to the study abroad experience as reflected in their application. FIE will nurture this enthusiasm and encourage immersion into the host culture.

FIE is a values-driven community that is invested in making a difference. We believe everybody should be able access the life changing benefits of studying abroad. Our Sharif Rahman Scholarships give recipients the opportunity to build their own views, participate in the host culture on an authentic basis and go on an adventure while being supported.

Students choose one of three application routes, each offering a scholarship worth $1000. The three application routes have been chosen to complement FIE’s core values. 
In addition to the financial award, all scholarship recipients will participate in a programme of supplementary benefits, which may include:
  • events to connect with other scholarship students
  • a scholarship mentor who will support the recipient to make the most of their study abroad experience and achieve their personal and academic goals
  • access to leadership opportunities and the chance to share opinions and impact FIE’s programmes.
 
Route 1 – Diversity and Inclusivity: Leader for Change
Application requirements:
  1. Submit a cover letter (500 words or less) which answers the following question: How will studying abroad with FIE help you achieve your academic, personal, or professional goals?
  2. A recommendation letter from a professor or academic advisor (this can be the same one used for the FIE program application).
  3. An essay (750 to 1000 words) which includes:
    1. Your genuine interest or experience with one or more diverse groups including but not limited to: race, ethnicity, nationality, socio-economic status, linguistic background, gender, gender identity, age, religion, sexual orientation, veterans and ability/disability.
    2. Examples of how you have taken advantage of opportunities to explore and challenge your identity, and/or led others to do the same.
    3. How you plan to use your study abroad experience to influence change and make the world more just, tolerant, and/or inclusive. Consider actions you can take during and after your time abroad to impact your campus, your community, your peers or yourself.
During the programme:
You will be connected with an FIE mentor and given opportunities to connect with diversity and inclusivity initiatives on FIE’s campus and the host community. Your mentor will support you to translate your words into action during your time abroad. Example opportunities include: participating in cultural and advocacy events, supporting FIE’s Mental Health Action Group with awareness days such as World Mental Health Day, or assisting with FIE’s Identify and Interest Groups (FIGS).
 
Route 2 – Environmental Responsibility: Lead by Example

Application requirements:
  1. Submit a cover letter (500 words or less) which answers the following question: How will studying abroad with FIE help you achieve your academic, personal, or professional goals?
  2. A recommendation letter from a professor or academic advisor (this can be the same one used for the FIE program application).
  3. An essay (750 to 1000 words) which includes:
    1. Your genuine interest and experience with sustainability and environmental responsibility. 
    2. Examples of how you express environmental awareness and activism in your day-to-day life. You may wish to mention environmental and/or sustainability projects/schemes you’re involved with at home or on your campus.
    3. How you plan to have an environmentally sustainable term and encourage others to do the same. Consider: many traditional study abroad activities, such as travel, also generate carbon emissions – how can you address this conflict? How can one student make a difference when it comes to environmental responsibility and climate change?
During the programme:
You will be connected with an FIE mentor and given opportunities to connect with environmental and sustainability initiatives on FIE’s campus and the host community. Your mentor will support you to translate your words into action during your time abroad. Example opportunities include: being a Students Organising for Sustainability representative, promoting local events and activities to FIE students, or supporting the work of FIE’s Sustainability Action Group.
 
Route 3 – Charity and Community: Servant Leadership
Application requirements:
  1. Submit a cover letter (500 words or less) which answers the following question: How will studying abroad with FIE help you achieve your academic, personal, or professional goals?
  2. A recommendation letter from a professor or academic advisor (this can be the same one used for the FIE program application).
  3. An essay (750 to 1000 words) which includes:
    1. Your genuine interest or experience with community action, charities, social justice and/or helping others in need.
    2. Examples of how you have supported a community in the past, perhaps by volunteering or fundraising.
    3. How you plan to start or continue to support charities, communities and people in need. Consider actions you can take during and after your time abroad to impact worthy causes. How can you identify and engage with needs in the local and international community?
During the programme:
You will be connected with an FIE mentor and given opportunities to connect with charity and community initiatives on FIE’s campus and the host community. Your mentor will support you to translate your words into action during your time abroad. Example opportunities include: selecting the Service Internship pathway, being a local volunteer (note: if you are on a visa, there may be restrictions on what you can do), fundraising for one of FIE’s designated charities (Marol Academy, Love Orphanage, Cancer UK, etc).
